Backpack Safety Tips

Pick the right backpack

Choose a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back. Remind your child to always use both shoulder straps.

Pack light

Your child’s backpack should never weigh more than 10% to 20% of his or her body weight. Go through the pack with your child weekly, and remove unneeded items.

Store above ground

Make sure you store your child’s background above the ground preferably on a hook or over a chair. Scorpions and other pests have been known to hide in backpacks.

Charlie from Glendale shared his experience with us. “I went to pull my sunglasses out of my backpack and immediately felt a burning sensation on my palm. I was stung by a bark scorpion. The pain was unreal. My whole arm went numb for two days. Now I always double check my backpack before grabbing a supply.”
